WHEN YOU PLAY THE GAME OF THRONES, YOU PIRATE OR……YEAH, YOU PIRATE.
As you’ve undoubtedly heard by now, the first 4 episodes of Game of Thrones’ fifth season have been leaked. Of course it’s safe to say the people from HBO are far from happy, though it’s nothing new. Game of Thrones has been the most pirated show for quite a while now.
How did this happen, though? What does it mean for HBO and for us here at the Fanbot?
The four leaked episodes have a blurred digital watermark and are in 480p, which is the equivalent of standard TV quality. HBO normally shows the show in either 720p or 1080p, so the current assumption is that the leaked episodes were actually screeners that were sent to the press ahead of launch.
HBO themselves have stated that the leak appears to be from “within a group approved by HBO to receive them.” They are currently trying to find out more, but so far it is unclear if their efforts have paid off.
Of course, this is bad news for HBO and their new streaming service HBO Now. If you want to compete with Netflix, having the first four episodes of your most popular exclusive show leaked is not a good way to start.
What does it mean for us at the Fanbot, though? We recently talked about the first episode of this new season and we obviously intend to talk about the ones to come as well. However, we will not be doing this ahead of time by watching the pirated episodes.
We will watch the episodes according to HBO’s schedule and try to have a video up one or two days later, much as we did with the first episode.
What will you do? Will you wait for the official episodes, or have you pirated them already? Let us know in the comments below!
