Ocean’s 8 Cast Revealed

While scrolling through upcoming movies, we found some interesting news on one in particular, Ocean’s Eight (Or Ocean’s Ocho, as it may be called). This heist thriller spin-off of the original Ocean’s trilogy has been drifting around for a while now, but yesterday a large part of the cast was announced.

Supposedly, the movie will feature Sandra Bullock as Danny Ocean’s sister, leading a team of her own. As opposed to Ocean’s 11 through 13 all male-teams, this one looks to be an all-female one. Hopefully the fact that it’s not a remake but a spin-off will prevent people from repeating the whole Ghostbusters outrage.

…Let’s also hope it doesn’t suck, as the new Ghosbusters wound up doing.

At Any rate, the screenplay is the work of Olivia Milch. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, well, it kinda should and it shouldn’t. She’s the daughter of writer and producer David Milch, who has created shows like Deadwood and NYPD Blue.

Olivia’s been following in her father’s footsteps. She’s co-written an adaption of William Faulkner’s Light in August with him and will act as coordinating producer for any projects that may arise from it. That’s not to say she’s coasting on her father’s reputation, though. She has written a screenplay for the movie Dude, about 4 female friends who’ve just graduated high school, which is currently in post-production.

She’s also been tapped by Fox to adapt Greg Rucka’s spy comic ‘Queen and Country’ and Sony has asked her to tackle ‘Little women.’

Of course, this is all great for her, but it’s not entirely clear what impact her involvement will have on Ocean’s Eight. At time of writing, nothing she’s worked on has really been exposed to the public, so we can’t really judge her writing. We’ll have to wait and see.

The movie will be directed by Gary Ross, who has written and directed for a number of projects including Seabiscuit and The Hunger Games. He has been nominated for 4 Oscars and has won several other awards over the course of his career.

Let’s look at the cast, though.

As mentioned, Sandra Bullock will reportedly be playing Danny Ocean’s as of yet unnamed sister. The rest of the characters remain unnamed as well, at time of writing, but the cast’s fairly impressive. With Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter all involved, it’s got its share of big names to throw on the poster.

And then we get to the weirder part of the casting. Mindy Kalling, from The Office and a number of voice acting gigs, is apparently involved and that’s fair enough. We weren’t expecting to see her in the cast, but it’s nice to see her there.

And then we noticed that, for some reason, Rihanna and Akwafina will be involved.

Let’s start with Rihanna. We double checked and no, it’s not like she’s only involved with the soundtrack as she’s done for many movies and series. Supposedly, she’s an actual part of the cast. Her sole acting roles so far were the moon goddess in 2014’s Annie and Petty officer Cora ‘Weps’ Raikes in 2012’s awful movie Battleship.

We’re…not sure why she’s here or what she’s meant to add to the movie. Especially when you compare her acting career to that of the rest of the cast.

Confused as we are about that choice it seems like ironclad logic compared to including Awkwafina. It may just be us, but our reaction to seeing that name came down to a resounding  “Who?”

If she wins up being the hacker or tech expert, just because she’s an Asian woman wearing glasses, we reserve the right to slap Miss Milch with the screenplay.

After some research we’re pleased to report that we’ve educated ourselves and our reaction has changed. It is now a resounding “Whyyyyyy?”

Long story short, Awkwafina may be completely unknown to you or you may think we’re idiots for not knowing her if you’re into rap and you still watch MTV for some reason. She’s  rapper who co-hosts MTV’s talk show Girl Code Live, has had a supporting role in Bad neighbours 2 and will apparently stare in the movie Dude.

Remember that title? Olivia Milch’s involvement with Ocean’s Eight might be a factor in Awkwafina making it into the cast, but it still seems like an odd choice to us. Having never seen her act, we can’t tell what her impact on the movie will be.

Unless a big part of this heist movie involves distracting security by breaking into a song and dance routine, we just don’t know why Rihanna and Awkwafina were included.

What do you think of the casting? Are you as confused as we are, or does it make perfect sense to you? Let us know in the comments!
